Paddle With Friends – June 27th

June 27 @ 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm
Shuttle at 11AM, Paddles wet at Noon. Paddle With Friends, Hosted by Headwaters Trails, is an opportunity to paddle with like minded folks from the Fishlake Rd paddle launch in Holly to Bush Park in Fenton. We will have a presentation and info tent south of river where you can learn about trail development in the area. There will be a short portage at the Fenton Mill Pond Dam and finish at Bush Park at the parking area on Jefferson St. Drop your boats off at Fishlake Rd and designate one person to take your vehicle to Bush Park to catch a provided shuttle back to the start.
Saturday, June 27 is an open invitation to see how communities along the Shiawassee River have been working to improve access and amenities so that any paddler can freely use the river system.
Beginning next to the river in Holly Township at Fish Lake Road, the public is invited to bring their kayaks or canoes and launch at noon for a seven-mile paddle. The excursion will follow the national paddling trail, cross the Fenton Mill Pond, utilize the new portage near the Fenton Police Department, and end up in Bush Park. A free shuttle service will allow participants to leave their vehicles at Bush Park and return to Holly to start the trip.
The City of Fenton, Holly Township, Holly Village, Headwaters Trails and Keepers of the Shiawassee are all local members of the Shiawassee River Water Trail Coalition. Together they clear woody debris, pick up trash and conduct water quality monitoring. With grant help, each community has undertaken capital improvements. For example, porta-potties have been installed at access points in Holly, Fenton and Argentine Township. The City of Fenton is completing access and portage sites around its dam. Linden has installed a ramp to assist handicapped individuals enter and leave the river. Mile posts now mark the whole 88-mile trail. Holly Township is planning a full-service trailhead next to the Fish Lake Road access. Information about these many improvements will be on display at Fish Lake Road an hour before the paddle begins.
Come “Paddle With Friends” and enjoy this beautiful recreational opportunity that flows through the center of our communities.
