DESCRIPTION:Paddling down the river\n\n\n\n\n\nHeadwaters Trails Adventure Paddle\n\n\n\nHeads Up! The status of Stiffs Mill Pond Dam may affect this event. The state has ordered the draw down of the mill pond to avoid a catastrophic dam failure. The dates of the draw down and the effects on the river are uncertain at this time. Check back here before the event date for any updates on the event status.\n\n\n\nIt is a pleasure to paddle the Shiawassee River from Water Works Park in Holly to Strom Park in Fenton. The Adventure Paddle as is a fundraiser for the people who open the river by cutting downed trees and pull out trash that accumulates every year. This is a good event for people who are new to paddling or new to the river as well as veterans. We station people along the way to help should anyone have trouble in the river. We will have helpers available at the rairoad tubes to assist in making the turn.This is the first section of the Shiawassee River National Water Trail. Headwaters Trails was the first group to get a portion of the river designated as a water trail. The river is beautiful in the spring\, with small mouth bass\, pike and turtles in the river. In the spring\, you can see the migrating warblers and other birds. The MDNR considers the upper Shiawassee a model of a river with good wetlands that prevent flash flooding in heavy rain events. \n\n\n\nShuttle Service:We are offering shuttle service from Strom Park\, Fenton. This service is to facilitate car staging for one vehicle driver only allowing easy access to your vehicle at the end of the paddle. We will paddle up stream to the beaver dam. Rex will be there to help those who wish to continue up stream get over the dam. Other paddlers may want to take the narrow channel to Wilson Lake (which also has a small beaver dam!) \n\n\n\nYou MUST have a life jacket (PFD) that fits and is properly fastened. You will need lights for the back of your boat so you can be seen but do not blind the person/s behind you. \n\n\n\nBe ready to have your boat and gear out and your vehicle parked so we can be on the water by 6:30. \n\n\n\nThose who want to continue the evening after we return can join us at one of the local restaurants or Scoops Ice Cream. SUMMARY:Guided Walk at Sorenson Park
DESCRIPTION:Headwaters Trails invites the public to a guided walk at Sorenson Park in Holly on June 5th from 6 to 8:30 pm lasting into the evening when the sun is setting. The park is located at 5142 E. Holly Road and the Nature Center is the starting point toward the back of the ball fields.  The walk is over even ground for about half a mile\, but walking shoes\, long pants and a hat are advised so that you will be able to leave the path and explore with our collaborators\, Oakland County Parks CISMA (Cooperative Invasive Specias Management Area) and Holly Township Parks. See you June 5th!  The event is free but donations are gladly accepted.There is an amazing expansive view of the Shiawassee River from The Charles Stewart Harding Mott\, II Overlook at the back of the park.  The native blue lupine plants help to attract pollinators\, especially the endangered Karner Blue Butterfly.  The blue lupine is the only plant that the Karner Blue caterpillars are able to eat. The oak barrens present at Sorensen Park are a vanishing ecosystem throughout the world.Bring your hat\, long pants and join us as we explore the beauty of Sorensen Park! We’re looking forward to a beautiful evening!
